For 21 of those matches, Bill led England as an inspirational captain, with fans still cherishing the unforgettable moment in March 1980 when England triumphed over Scotland to secure the Grand Slam—following a thrilling victory against Wales at Twickenham (England 9, Wales 8).

Bill’s journey began in 1970 with the Fylde sixth team, where few could have predicted the heights he would reach. He went on to earn seven British & Irish Lions caps—three in New Zealand (1977) and four as captain in South Africa (1980).

Beyond the pitch, Bill became a familiar face on the iconic television show A Question of Sport and remains deeply involved in the development of rugby at Twickenham. His immense contributions to the sport were recognised with an OBE in the 1982 New Year’s Honours.
