Andy earned 23 caps for Scotland over a ten-year period, seven of which were as captain. His first cap came in 1992 against England while playing for Dundee HSFP, and his final appearance was in 2001 against New Zealand at Murrayfield, where he captained Glasgow Rugby.

In 2000, Andy captained Scotland to a memorable Calcutta Cup victory over England at Murrayfield, denying England a Grand Slam and cementing his place in Scottish rugby history.

Since retiring from professional rugby, Andy has transitioned into a career in banking, working with RBS Private Banking, while also contributing as a regular columnist for The Herald. He serves as Chairman of the West of Scotland Institute of Sport.
