Gareth is a former Welsh rugby union footballer, renowned as one of the greatest scrum-halves in the history of the sport. He played a pivotal role in the Welsh national team during the 1960s and 1970s, a period when Wales dominated European rugby.

Gareth made his debut for Cardiff RFC on 17th September 1966 in a match against Coventry, and over the course of his career with the club, he scored 67 tries in 195 appearances. His impressive performances earned him his first international cap for Wales on 1st April 1967 at just 19 years old, playing against France in Paris.
Between 1967 and 1978, Gareth earned 53 caps for Wales, including 13 as captain. All his caps were earned in succession, and Gareth was widely regarded as the ultimate finisher, blessed with exceptional pace, strength, agility, and guile. Over his international career, he scored twenty tries for Wales.
At the age of just 20, Gareth became Wales’ youngest ever captain, leading the team against Scotland in 1968. He was named Wales Player of the Year in 1969, and in 1974, he was recognised as BBC Wales Sports Personality of the Year. His remarkable achievements in the game were honoured with an MBE in 1975.
Gareth’s illustrious international career came to a close on 18th March 1978, marking the end of his playing days in a match against France in the Five Nations Championship, the same opponent he had faced at the start of his career.
In addition to his success with Wales, Gareth was also a key player for the British Lions, earning ten caps across two historic tours. He was part of the legendary 1971 Lions team, the only Lions side to win a series in New Zealand, and he also played in the unbeaten 1974 Lions team that toured South Africa.
Today, Gareth is celebrated not only as one of the finest players to have graced the sport but also as a highly regarded motivational speaker, sharing his experiences of leadership, resilience, and excellence on and off the field.
