Jonathan’s rugby journey began in Rugby Union, where he developed his skills at Trimsaran RFC before joining Neath in 1982, playing as a fly-half. After 35 appearances, he earned his first international cap for Wales, marking his debut with a try and a drop goal against England, and was named Man of the Match. In 1988, he transferred to Llanelli, playing a key role in Wales’ Triple Crown success.
In 1989, Jonathan made a bold decision to switch to Rugby League, signing for Widnes. He quickly adapted to the new code, playing centre during Widnes’ 1989 World Cup Challenge victory over Canberra Raiders. In 1991, Jonathan furthered his career by playing for the Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs in Sydney. After Widnes encountered financial struggles in 1993, he moved to Warrington, where he represented Great Britain and scored a try in their historic defeat of Australia at Old Wembley Stadium, earning Player of the Season honours.
With Rugby Union turning professional in 1995, Jonathan returned to the sport, signing for Cardiff RFC and continuing to play for Wales until 1997. He retired from professional rugby that same year, having established a remarkable dual-code career.
Following his playing career, Jonathan transitioned into television and broadcasting, where his in-depth technical knowledge of rugby and his charismatic presence have made him a highly respected TV presenter.
